Amidst all the intellectual (and, of course, very middle-class) debate about how calmly and lucidly Belle de Jour handled her decision, back in 2003, to embark on a (brief) career as a call girl in order fund her PhD studies, and how expertly she has now handled the revelation of her true identity, the other side of the story seems to have been rather forgotten: namely, that prostitution isn’t all ITV-peaktime-high-gloss-airbrushed-drama-starring-Billie-Piper. I’m glad that The Guardian has remembered, at least.
